Read the insightful Caption! Did you see Copperpod Trees blooming around you? ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’› Beautiful captures from @radharangarajan, educating the masses about Trees and Wildlife that surrounds us. As a child, the Copperpod is what I knew as โ€œthe yellow trees in the park that bloom during exam season.โ€ There was a massive tree in my schoolyard, and an even larger one covered the bus stop I went to every day during college. Yet, it took me many years to discover what the tree was called! The Copperpod gets its name from its coppery-red seed pods, and also goes by Rusty Shield Bearer, Yellow Gulmohar and Yellow Flamboyant. The binomial, Peltophorum pterocarpum, is both alliterative and informative. โ€˜Peltophorumโ€™ means shield-bearing in Latin, a nod to the shield-shaped stigma in the flowers. โ€˜Pterocarpumโ€™ means winged seeds in Latin โ€“ โ€˜pteroโ€™ is wing, and โ€˜carpusโ€™ means seed. Did you know that in Java, a dye extracted from the bark is used to create a yellow-brown colour for Batik? โ€“ While the Copperpod is from India, it is truly native only to the Andamans. The native range then spreads through Sri Lanka, some southeast Asian countries and Northern Australia. โ€“ The tree is umbrella-shaped, can grow really tall, and looks stunning whether it is full of leaves, flowers or seeds! โ€“ The golden yellow flowers have crinkly petals and look gorgeous, both by day and night! โ€“ The flat fruit pods ripen to a lovely copper red and then fade to black. They stay on the tree for many months. The stalk that runs through the leaves is also brown in colour! โ€“ The tree is planted extensively in parks and avenues, and generally makes every place better! โ€“ One of the highlights of the Copperpod tree is the unbelievably beautiful floral carpet it creates when the flowers fall. #treesofinstagram #treestagram #treelovers #fiftytrees #urbantrees #treesofbangalore #bangaloretrees #floweringtrees #copperpod #peltophorumpterocarpum #rustyshieldbearer
